As much as we may not care to admit it, almost each and every one of us has experienced getting fired from a job at one point in our lives. Whether we deserved it or not, getting fired is never really enjoyable. Even if we weren’t crazy about the job in the first place, it is always better to leave on our own terms.
Of course, this isn’t always the case – and people get fired for all sorts of reasons all the time. While we could dwell on the past and wonder what went wrong, we could also laugh at ourselves a little. If not at ourselves, then at least at the people on this list – who all lost their jobs for some hilarious reasons.
Jimmy Fallon asked people to share on Twitter why they got fired using the hashtag #WhyIGotFired, and they really delivered. From melting an entire freezer of ice cream to pulling a prank-gone-wrong, these are some of the funniest and most unique ways that people lost their jobs.
Too many questions
One would think that there would be a little bit of training involved when hiring a bartender with zero experience. However, one thing that even non-bartenders should know is what is in a rum and coke – it is in its name after all!
Unfortunately, this woman’s bartending experience was short-lived, as she got fired after trying to find out what exactly was in a rum and coke. Safe to say, she should probably choose a different career path.
When working in a restaurant that celebrities often frequent, it can be difficult to try and stay cool – especially when you see someone as awesome as Ryan Reynolds!
Come on, how can you NOT ask for his autograph when he is sitting just a few feet away? While this waitress did manage to snag his autograph, she also lost her job in the process. Oh well, at least she thought it was totally worth it – which we have to agree.
Olive Garden is one of the best Italian chains in the country, known for its huge pasta servings, unlimited soup and salad, never-ending breadsticks, and some tasty adult beverages.
So when date night rolled around for this Olive Garden hostess, her boyfriend thought it was a good idea to take her to her place of work so, you know, they could get a discount. They had some great dinner and tasty drinks – the only problem? She was 19. It’s kind of hard to underage drink when your boss who knows your age is standing nearby.
This has to be one of the most embarrassing ways to lose a job. We can’t imagine what her co-workers said when they walked into what they thought was just a normal hotel only to discover it was something a bit different.
But hey, at least it had a good rating! And maybe the place shouldn’t have been so conspicuous about what sort of business they were really running. This is why it is always best to call and check before you book.
Whoever thought of this idea certainly deserves some sort of award for creativity. Why talk to rude or complaining customers all day when you can just talk to yourself for hours instead?
While it may have seemed like a flawless plan at the time, his friend’s boss somehow found out in the end. We can only imagine how hilarious that conversation was. We just wonder how long this went on for before he was finally discovered.
Waste of bagels
To be fair, this former Dunkin Donuts employee was just trying to take some of their ‘trash’ off of their hands, one would think they would be grateful if anything!
It’s not like they were planning on saving the bagels for themselves. While she might have been able to get by with a simple apology, it was probably her hilarious response that got her fired – which we guess her boss didn’t find quite as funny.
5 second rule
Working at an amusement park may seem like fun and games, but apparently it is pretty serious. This particular park took their choice in employees pretty seriously, as with their opinion on the 5 second rule.
Apparently, they were less than pleased to see someone who worked there eat a piece of rock candy that had been dropped on the floor. Things got so bad, that she actually had to get escorted by security. Why do we feel like there is a piece of the story that we are missing?
Some companies are so cool, that they actually have an office dog. Because why not bring a bit of joy into your employees’ work day with a cute fluffy friend?
Unfortunately for this girl, her obsession with the company dog got to be a little too much. It turns out playing with a cute dog all day can maybe affect your productivity. But really, can we blame her? How can one focus when there is an adorable puppy running around?
Once in a lifetime
Look, if you see Zac Efron having dinner at a restaurant you work at – it probably isn’t the most professional thing in the world to go up to him and ask for an autograph.
But then again, this is Zac Efron we are talking about – how could any High School Musical lover back out of a once in a lifetime opportunity like this? This particular waitress couldn’t resist, but hey – a job is only temporary, a memory with Zac Efron lasts a lifetime.
Let’s face it, we aren’t always the proudest of the decisions we made in our younger years. But at the time, Glee was pretty much the best show on television and there were very limited options for streaming and recording like there are now.
So that meant that if our favorite show was on on Tuesday night, we were going to make sure that we would be there to watch it. However, we can see how it might be a bit difficult to convince your boss to give you every Tuesday night off just so you could watch Glee.
Do not disturb
Whether or not we care to admit it, we have all had those times where we called out ‘sick’ when we really just didn’t want to go to work. This person’s friend, however, had their own reasons that had to do with not wanting to disturb their cat.
Hey, when your cat is snuggling you, you enjoy every second of that precious moment! Unfortunately, it sounds like this person’s boss was not really a cat person.
While some people may assume that being a cashier is easy, this isn’t exactly the case. Not only do you have to deal with long lines of hungry customers at a daily basis, but you also have to know a bit of math.
Unfortunately for this girl, she didn’t really pay attention in math class growing up, and instead of using a calculator she would just round up when giving back people’s change – which we are sure they never complained about.
One rule about working in food service is, you should probably avoid acrylic nails – or at least make sure they are glued on pretty good.
This former ice cream scooper learned this the hard way when one of her nails ended up in her customer’s cone. We can only imagine how awkward and embarrassing this whole thing must have been! And not to mention how grossed out the customer must have been – at least they didn’t eat it by mistake, or at least we hope not!
Skip the mayo
We have to say, this person’s co-worker at Wendy’s probably deserved to get fired considering the horrible (and not to mention super unsanitary) act that they committed.
And really, in what world is it okay to eat mayonnaise directly out of a jug, and with their bare hands nonetheless? No matter how much we love mayo on our grilled chicken sandwiches, we think we might be skipping out on that condiment next time we’re at Wendy’s.
Prank gone wrong
There is no doubt that when things get slow at work, the hours can seem to drag on forever and ever – even if you work in a place as fabulous as Ikea.
These two friends decided to do something productive with their time, by hiding in closets and scaring the few customers they had. The only problem? The first person to discover them was their boss – who we are guessing was more confused than he was scared.
Chicken nugget thief
Working at McDonald’s isn’t as easy as it looks, all of the customers, long lines, and not to mention the constant smell of fried fast food goodness, can make things challenging.
While in the middle of a shift, this guy apparently couldn’t help himself any longer and snagged a McNugget from the kitchen. Looking back, he could have probably just waited until lunch time and used his employee discount to buy a pack of nuggets – but when hunger calls…
Fired by Dad
This guy was clearly fed up with his boss yelling at his secretary all day – so he did the only reasonable thing, call him out on it! The only problem?
His dad is his boss and his mom is his secretary. We guess having your dad as your boss doesn’t necessarily guarantee you a pass when you do something wrong. It is safe to assume that family dinner was more awkward than usual that night.
Let’s face it, most of us made some mistakes here and there when we were 16 and had our first job. This person’s mistake, however, is one they will likely never forget.
Unfortunately, they had to learn the hard way that when cleaning an oven with oven cleaning spray, you might want to wipe it down afterwards – or else it may just blow the oven door off. Thankfully, no one got hurt – although they did lose their job.
There goes the corn
Before letting an unexperienced tractor driver drive a giant tractor, it is probably best to actually make sure they know what they are doing before handing over the keys.
This girl really tried her best, despite running over dozens of corn in the process before her employer realized they made a mistake. At least it is an experience she will never forget – although she should probably avoid adding ‘tractor driving’ to her skills on her resume.
Catching some z’s
Sometimes, we are so tired at work – that we can’t help but close our eyes and put our head down for a little catnap. This may sound like a good idea, but it is probably best to make sure your boss is not around before you snooze on the job.
And when you are caught, it is probably not the best idea to tell them the real reason why you were napping – that you were bored.
While one would think that being able to do an impression of Smeagol from The Lord of the Rings would be a pretty impressive skill, her manager was a bit less than pleased with her talent.
Did she really get fired because they were over-staffed? Or was it because her impression was overdone? Either way, we only hope she was able to take her awesome skills elsewhere – to a place where they were actually appreciated.
Everybody dance now
The ’90s was certainly a special time, filled with some pretty awesome jams – like Gonna Make You Sweat by C+C Music Factory, for example. This former Walmart employee loved this song so much, she decided to pump up the customers by reciting some of the lyrics over the PA system.
She probably could have just done it once…but still, we have to give her props for her enthusiasm. She may have lost her job, but at least she has this hilarious story to back her up.
Let go by a spouse
Working with a spouse isn’t as fun as some people assume. It can get especially awkward if your husband is also your boss – talk about testing your marriage.
What can be even worse? When you get fired by your own husband for clicking your pen too much – when it wasn’t even you but actually the project manager! Talk about unfair. We can only imagine how uncomfortable it must have been once they were back home.
Sometimes, the reasons we get fired have nothing to really do with us whatsoever. Take this guy, for example, who just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time AKA the freezer at Popeyes Chicken.
He was just going in to grab something for the kitchen, minding his own business, when suddenly he witnessed a pretty intimate moment between his manager and owner. He was ‘mysteriously’ let go after that moment, although if it was us we would have probably left voluntarily.
Sneaking out of your office in the middle of the day to catch a matinee movie might seem like a fool-proof plan at first because, really, who goes to see matinees anyways? It just so happened that she was right, there were only two other people in the theater – just as she suspected.
There was just one tiny problem – they were her boss and his wife. Seems like this was something she wasn’t able to talk herself out of.
Sometimes, when an opportunity awaits and our job is in the way – we have to make a decision, keep our job? Or go do something amazing?
This guy, luckily, chose the latter – to leave work in order to see The Who in concert. He may have gotten fired, but at least he got to meet the whole band, and hang out with Pete Townshed for eight hours straight – we are sure he doesn’t have any regrets about this decision.
This doctor looks back fondly on his old job as a waiter, even if he did get fired for giving a free bowl of ice cream to a couple celebrating their anniversary.
Luckily, it seems like there are no hard feelings seeing as he went on to become a tenured professor and the manager who fired him still works in the same place. Maybe he should show up one day and ask for some ice cream.
Poor ice cream
As a teenager, dealing with your first ever closing shift can be intimidating. There is so much to remember. Turn off the lights? Check. Turn off the freezer? Check. Wait…It turns out that freezers shouldn’t be turned off, especially when they are carrying gallons of precious Ben & Jerry’s ice cream!
This poor girl got fired for her mistake, and we have a feeling she will never look at a pint of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream the same way again.
Pick a side
While some may think coffee is coffee…there are plenty people out there who would beg to differ, especially when it comes to the whole Team Starbucks vs. Team Dunkins debate.
This Dunkin Donuts employee clearly didn’t get the memo because he showed up to his shift with a cup of Starbucks coffee in his hand. How dare he?! His manager was clearly not pleased and let him go, probably after saying something like, ‘If you like them so much, why don’t you go work there!’
All you can eat
One of the perks of working at Dairy Queen? Getting to eat all of the ice cream you want. Okay, well maybe not all of the ice cream, but you know, like a normal amount.
This former Dairy Queen worker clearly couldn’t help herself, and ended up possibly spending a bit too much time by the soft serve machine. But honestly, can you blame her? At least she was making the most out of her work experience.
Just too good
What is one of the best reasons for getting fired? Being too good at your job, of course. This woman’s brother was apparently so good and fast at what he did, that it was causing too much stress and pressure on his co-workers.
So instead of trying to find more employees with his work ethic and letting go of some of the less efficient workers, his boss just fired him instead. Well, we hope they at least gave him a good reference.
In yet another case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, this guy happened to stumble upon his boss “helping out” his secretary in the copy room… helping to make a copy of themselves, apparently.
We can only imagine how uncomfortable this must have been for everyone involved – and we really do hope he was able to get a new and better job after, or at least one that has a copy room with a lock.
Sounds like this guy definitely has some good memories from his first job at McDonald’s – well, at least one that is since he didn’t last long.
For some reason, he decided to throw a bag of black pepper onto a giant fan in the kitchen – making his co-workers pretty much hate his guts. Was there a motive behind this foolish act? Probably not, but then again who needs an excuse to pull a prank when they’re 16.
When calling out sick for work, it can help if you have a believable excuse, or an excuse at all for that matter. If you can’t think of anything, thinking of something witty to say could just be the next best thing.
Take this awesome dad, for example, who said that he couldn’t ‘see’ himself coming into work after claiming there was ‘something wrong with his eyes.’ Unfortunately for him, his clever response only landed him in unemployment.
Why do people think it’s okay to scare their co-workers or customers at work? Come on, they must know that it isn’t going to end well – just as was the case when this guy’s friend decided to hide in a morticians drawer. He clearly got what was coming for him though!
Maybe getting a little scare of his own will prove that trying to prank others at your place of work isn’t the best idea after all.
Welcome to the party
There are certain times where it just feels like the universe is trying to have a laugh at your expense. Like when you’re running late to work and a car drives by and splashes you with dirty street water.
But there are other times that feel like the entire universe is not only laughing at you, but also that it is making an example of you. Like when you skip work to go to a party and then your boss is there. That’s gotta be karma somehow.
He was just having some fun!
No matter how good some jobs are, there are lines you can’t really cross. Most jobs don’t let you pal around with your boss like you would with your co-workers. Other jobs don’t let you take any extra break time.
Worse still, other jobs won’t let you sing songs over the intercom so that the entire store can hear you. We think that’s a darn shame too. How else are lowly Rite-Aid workers going to get discovered and find their way onto American Idol? Forget the sale on chicken soup, it’s time for the big stage.
Cheery, but not too cheery
One of the biggest assets that you can have if you work in customer service is being a cheery person. You can be totally unqualified, stupid, and careless, but you’ll find plenty of jobs if you’re cheery enough. (Don’t feel bad if this describes you…it also describes plenty of our friends.)
It seems that this person didn’t have the right amount of cheer for their job, but then again, what IS the right amount of cheer if you’re working at a funeral parlor? Don’t be dead silent, that’s for sure.
We wonder why
Having a job while being a student is hard. If you’ve ever been in college, you probably know the struggle of working a part-time gig when you just want to be having party time. Or study time, hopefully. Either way, school can often take your focus away from your job, and it’s tough to find a balance.
This person got fired because they didn’t seem quite committed enough, but graduation was right around the corner. They were probably just studying for tough finals! If they had given them a month they would’ve excelled, likely.
We all know someone who has tried to (or succeeded in) taking a nap while at work. Maybe that person’s you, and if so, we sure hope you never got caught.
The key to taking a nap at work is to be as strategic as possible. It needs to be relatively short, and you need to be somewhere where you aren’t likely to be caught snoozing. The bottom shelves of the toy aisle? We’d say that it’s exactly the best spot. Maybe the Legos and My Little Pony plushies lulled them to sleep.
Repping the wrong team
Every job wants you to have a little team spirit. It can be hard to be super into the place you’re working at if it’s, you know, not an awesome spot, but you gotta fake it til you make it. Do you hate McDonald’s? Doesn’t matter. If you’re working there, you better put on a face like you’re loving it.
Same goes for if you work at Starbucks. You don’t need to scream to the heavens about how great they are, but you need to seem like you aren’t a fan of their competitors.
The most awesome substitute ever
Remember field trips? Yeah, we do too. The little breaks from the monotony of school were so exciting that we were constantly waiting for the next time we got to load up into the bus and go somewhere that ended up being underwhelming. Now we’re adults and we can take field trips whenever we want, and it’s a lot less exciting.
We’re sure that these kids were beyond stoked when their sub announced a field trip to the mall, of all places. Their sub was probably less stoked when they got fired.
The five second rule
Ah, yes, the five second rule. The ultimate rule of food hygiene and safety that will forever protect you as long as you follow it to a T. If you drop something on the ground, you have five seconds to eat it before it goes bad. Does it make sense? Surely not, but don’t ask us, we just blindly follow it.
Sorta like how this person on the job blindly followed it. We guess that their manager didn’t find it too classy of a move, though. We guess they were going by the three second rule.
Taking it into your own hands
Sometimes when it comes to requests for time off from work, you just need to take things into your own hands. Your boss isn’t gonna want you to go home from work five minutes early, of course, but are you just gonna give up because of that?
True heroes will take control of their own destiny and just close the store early. Too bad the boss is there to put a stop to your hopes and dreams if you ever try this…but either way, you get to go home early. That’s a win to us.
Getting ticked off
People in power tend to have rather touchy tempers. It’s just something we’ve noticed, and we’re sure that you have too. You need to be really careful with what words you use when you talk to your superiors or else you’ll find yourself fired with a quickness.
This lady saw an opportunity to help out her boss by pointing out a tick on his neck. When she was too grossed out to remove it, he got mad and fired her. Totally not cool. We’re thinking he just got a little too ticked off.
A little too honest
Honesty is the best policy…most of the time. Except for all those times when you really should keep things to yourself. You know how little kids will walk up to people, look them in the eyes, and tell them that they’re ugly? Yeah, the goal is to be honest, but not savage like those tiny monsters are.
This person had a little too much honesty in them when they went to work this day and let a customer know that their oral hygiene needed some attention. Have you no chill?
The weirdest firing ever
Most of the time, people get fired because of something wrong that they did. Whether that was actually wrong enough to warrant firing is up for debate most of the time (as this article has somewhat proved). But regardless, there is usually an event that triggers the firing. In this case, not really.
This person hadn’t worked for McDonald’s in years before they realized it and decided to fire them. Does that mean that we could all just stop showing up for work and no one would notice?
This one’s just a mess!
A lot of these other firings make total sense, but we’re honestly lost on this one. Let’s try to get the story straight. So this person gave their two weeks. Two weeks later, everyone started saying bye to them. You know, because they were quitting.
Then their boss noticed it, got confused, and asked what was up. Then they tried quitting again, their boss cried, then fired them? What did they even do? Can you fire someone for trying to quit? This whole thing feels like a scene out of The Office.
Three hours is three hours
It’s not totally uncommon for people to apply for jobs that they aren’t qualified for. It is uncommon for them to apply for jobs that they can’t even fake being qualified for, though. It’s even more uncommon for them to then get the job. Seriously, how on earth did this person get a job as a karate instructor without knowing any karate?
Was the interview just, “Do you know karate?” to which they answered, “Yes”? They need more rigorous questions next time! This person was probably pretty happy about those three hours of pay, though.
But I really had to go!
We’re pretty sure that we can all sympathize with this one. Really having to go to the bathroom when you really can’t is an awful feeling, and in that moment we would all consider drastic steps.
We probably would’ve ran across the street to the gas station bathroom. This guy, though? He not only broke into his boss’ private bathroom, but he used precious and expensive company equipment to do so. A bold move, we’ll give him that. But an inarguably stupid and fire-able move, as well.
