The Capoeira craze


When it comes to dance-circles on the streets or those intense Zumba workout DVDs advertised, it can seem a little intimidating, but at the same time intriguing! On the subject of working out, would you choose martial arts or a good dance around? On the one hand, you could learn how to defend yourself, while on the other you could learn some crazy dance moves to tear up the dancefloor! What if we told you there was a way you could combine them both to become the ultimate machine?

What is Capoeira?

Capoeira (no we don’t need a gazoontite!) is a form of self-defense that is performed to music but incorporating dance moves. Performing Capoeira doesn’t necessarily see you doing the worm, but there are plenty of leg kicks, swings, and lunges to keep you moving. So is it martial arts? A crazy dance? Moving to music? Well, it’s all three! With classes now being taught all around the world, you’ll find how the combination makes it all flow together into one rather eloquent (maybe not in our case) movement!

Where did it come from?

Originating during the slave trade period, thousands of native Africans found themselves being taken to Brazil. They were legally kept away from the guns, and in a bid to rebel against their captors, they perfected the art of using their bodies as their weapon! The 16th and 17th centuries saw Capoeira evolve under the ideal cloak of looking as though they were dancing. In modern times, Capoeira has developed so everyone can participate, but the basis has remained the same.

Why would anyone want to do it?

As well as joining a worldwide family community, Capoeira has amazing health benefits. The moves are an excellent way to burn calories but while having fun and not even realizing how much you’re working out – sounds perfect! At the same time, you’ll be helping to enhance your endurance and improve your flexibility. You won’t be expected to walk in on your hands and instantly scissor kick in the air either. The classes are designed to start at absolute beginner stage and work up to your comfort level. With classes being held all over the world, it’s no surprise that the craze has taken off as quickly as it has. So what makes it different to any other exercise class? When watching any videos online, or seeing the performers do what they can, it’s easy to see how much fun they’re having! Combined with the music, you can easily find yourself lost in the atmosphere and caught up bouncing off all the positive energy in the room. This art of self-defense is no longer used to ward off attackers, but instead to bring people together, just as the thousands of Africans came together all those hundreds of years ago!
With the art having evolved so that everyone can have a go, and the positivity that radiates off the participants, it’s hard to find a reason not to give this craze that is sweeping the world a go! You can easily find yourself after becoming a fellow capoeirista and join the growing family. Plus, who doesn’t love a good dance to some funky music?
