Parkour is a training discipline that involves quick and limber movement over a series of obstacles and courses. It was developed from military assault course training and is designed to work and exercise every particular part of the body. Freerunning, which is also well-known, is an offshoot of parkour more concerned with running across cities and using more acrobatic types of moves.
It is an activity that can be practiced alone and is usually done in wide open spaces. Parkour is all about navigating and assessing the environment around you and making sure you use it to your advantage. Planning and probing ahead is really important in parkour, and it’s one of the most agile pursuits out there. This is a list of some of the key things you never knew about parkour.
It has its own gym
Parkour has come a long way from its humble beginnings – first developed in France in the 1980s by Raymond Bell. However, the pursuit, really more of a sport now, has become much more mainstream over the past decade, and it even has its own gym now! Yes, believe it or not, there is a parkour gym in Cincinnati! A guy called Matt Peveley founded Swift Movement Studio ten years ago, starting with nothing but an idea. Now that idea has come to fruition, and the gym is one of the most popular in the city.
It featured in James Bond!
It kind of stands to reason if you think about it, as parkour is pretty similar to the foot chases that 007 always seems to get himself into at the start of Bond movies. And, the discipline finally got its day in the Bond-shaped spotlight with the release of 2006’s Casino Royale. There is an entire sequence at the start involving James Bond pursuing a bomb maker in Madagascar, who tries to escape by using parkour. It is a truly breathtaking scene and showcases the amazing things you can do through the use of parkour.
There are no moves
Unlike most sports or exercises, parkour doesn’t actually have specific moves. It allows people the freedom to express themselves however they wish to, and it’s often styles that set people apart. This is one of the things that makes parkour such a popular and accessible sport for people. You don’t have to learn or adhere to a strict set of rules and regulations, instead, people are encouraged to develop their own way of doing things.
You can learn it
You might look at people doing parkour, and see videos of moves and think, I could never do that., No way. In reality, this isn’t true, and there’s actually no reason why you can’t learn parkour. Yes, it’s going to be hard work, and it will take time, and you’ll almost certainly need to get fitter. But it is definitely possible to learn parkour and enjoy your very own freedom and expression through movement.
So, these are some of the things you never knew about parkour that you now do. There is a lot involved in it, and it’s not the same as freerunning. Parkour is not as easy as it looks, and is one of the best ways of keeping fit and ensuring you are more acrobatic. So, you need to make sure you do as much as you can to study and practice parkour, you’ll be glad you discovered this amazing discipline.
