One of the principal things to look out for here is an elevated resting heart rate. This is where your heart rate is higher than it ought to be, even when you aren’t exercising. If you wake up and find you have an abnormally high RHR, this could be cause for concern. It is one of the biggest indicators that you have overtraining syndrome, and that you need to step back and start taking things seriously. It will feel exactly the way it does when you are recovering from illness, and the symptoms are all incredibly similar.
You might be having trouble sleeping because insomnia is one of the big symptoms of overtraining syndrome. The trouble with this, of course, is that if you aren’t able to sleep your body can’t get the rest it needs to focus on recovery. Furthermore, your mind will not be retiring either, so you’re going to find yourself fatigued and unable to produce and function at the highest possible level. If this happens, you’re going to need to take a few days away from the gym and help your symptoms get back to normal.
Emotional changes are another major sign of overtraining syndrome, and this is particularly taxing because it can put a strain on your hormones. If you feel you are more irritable and you feel down most of the time, it’s probably a sign that you need to look at stepping away from the gym. This is something that might happen gradually, but you are definitely going to notice a difference in your mood and disposition.
Sore muscles happen after you’ve been strenuously working out in the gym, but, if you’ve been overdoing it, your muscles are likely to be sore all the time, even when you aren’t working out. If your aches are deep aches that are lasting for several days, you need to reign it in and start taking it easy. Another big indicator is when muscles you haven’t actually trained start to ache!

It’s so easy to get into the habit of working out a lot because you like what it’s doing to you. And this can lead to you overdoing it, and really starting to suffer as a result.
